IPIRP Course

New York Internet Point Insurance Reduction Program

The State of New York has a Point & Insurance Reduction Program. This program does the following:

  • Refreshes driving knowledge.
  • Reduces points on a driving record.
  • Reduces insurance rates.

For years, this had to be done in person by private traffic schools, but since 2006 the State of New York has allowed for the IPIRP program. This is a program that enables New York drivers to take their accident prevention course on the web every five years.

The IPIRP course is restricted to driver training companies whose classroom courses were already approved by the New York DMV by the time the IPIRP law went into effect back in 2006.

According to the New York IPIRP / Alternate Delivery Method Program Sponsoring Agency Application, the purpose of the 5 year IPIRP course is to review and study internet and other technologies as viable methods for delivering the accident prevention course. The five-year pilot commencement date will actually begin when the first course is officially approved. After the pilot period has ended, the DMV will then decide whether to permanently implement IPIRP as an option for New York drivers who wish to complete an accident prevention course over the web.

The New York PIRP Course

The DMV offers online versions of the PIRP course, but traditional classroom courses will continue to be available. A classroom course offers a different level of interaction, where the information is distributed in a completely different manner when compared to the online course. We partner with the state of New York to bring you the Defensive Driving Course online. To receive the discount, you must enter the following code: TECH10.

DMV Point System Summary

Below you will find a table that shows the point values assigned to moving violations in the state of New York. These points are assessed against your driving record based on the date you committed the violation. It is not the date you were convicted in court. If a driver accumulates 11 or more points in an 18-month span, then that driver will have a hearing with the DMV. After this hearing, the driver's license may be suspended or revoked due to this point accumulation. As the driver, you will be offered the option of waiving the hearing or accepting a definite period of suspension.

Some license revocations and suspensions are mandatory and do not depend on an accumulation of points. Three speeding violations within 18 months is an automatic suspension, as is any convictions involving drugs or alcohol.
